‘We are devastated’

The man was found by an "acquaintance" who was helping search for the boy in the forest. He went to the forest to help with the search because he knew something was wrong, The Heraldreported.

Police said the witness was with the man carrying the knife when they made the arrest, though the acquaintance declined to comment further.

Describing Alex as a "beautiful young man", the Fisher family made what it said was its only statement on Friday.

"As you can imagine, we are devastated by the sudden loss of a beloved son, brother, grandson, uncle, nephew, cousin, a class mate and friend to many, fellow Scout and the wider community.

"We have been overwhelmed by the huge outpouring of support from the police, search and rescue, armed forces, Waitarere Beach Horowhenua community and the many volunteers," the family said.

"We have also appreciated everyone who has donated food, money, time and prayers. It is really appreciated and has shown the family how terrific our local community and country as a whole really is."

The family said it had a long association with Waitarere Beach. "Alex’s grandmother lived there for over 27 years. The family have had many lovely and memorable occasions at the beach."

The family asked that they and their community be left to grieve.

On Friday afternoon, 20 people, including kaumatua and police, took part in a blessing at Waitarere Beach, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Horowhenua Mayor Brendan Duffy described the death of Alex as "an enormous tragedy".

"It’s tough going," Duffy said. He said the image that was on display was a photo of Alex from the family home. "That is the image the family chose," he said.

A vigil would be held at the Waitarere Domain at 7pm on Sunday.

Forlong said although it was a homicide investigation, they were "keeping an open mind" about what had occurred.

"We are, however, building a good picture of the events which led to the boy’s death and it is important for the community in Waitarere to know that we do not believe there is any wider risk involved.
